For Introductory Reading:
Carson, D.A. Christ and Culture Revisited. Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans Publishing Company 2008
English, Adam & Olson, Roger. Pocket History of Theology. Downers Grove: Ill: InterVarsity Press. 2005
Olson, Roger. Pocket History of Evangelical Theology. Downers Grove, Ill: InteVarsity Press, 2007.
A very helpful concise history of evangelical theology that is particularly useful to get a sense of the contours of its roots and shoots and present day tensions. I especially appreciated reading the last chapter to get a feel for a number of current controversies within evangelicalism.
Kantzer, Kenneth. Evangelical Roots. New York, New York: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1978.
Noll, Mark. The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind. Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans Publishing Co, 1994.
Historian Mark Noll’s cry of the heart for evangelicals to reject its history of anti-intellectualism and to get on with repairing the problem.
